Each week Release Day Picks profiles new LPs and EPs Team JamBase will be checking out on release day Friday. This week we highlight new albums by , , The Hip Abduction and Kung Fu. Read on for more insight into the records we have all queued up to spin.
Jeff Buckley – You And I

The Scoop: Perhaps best-known for his cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” this posthumously released album of recordings by the late Jeff Buckley is largely made up of more covers of well-known songs. Culled from Buckley’s first studio session for Columbia Records with producer Steve Addabbo at his Shelter Island Sound studio in February 1993, also featured are tracks originally performed by Bob Dylan, Sly & The Family Stone, Led Zepplin, Jevetta Steele, Louis Jordan and The Smiths. There are also two two originals: Buckley’s first recording of “Grace” and his haunting, dream-inspired composition “Dream Of You And I.” Here’s his take on Everyday People” by Sly & The Family Stone:

Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real – Something Real

The Scoop: Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real are coming off easily their biggest year to-date. The San Francisco-based band had the high profile gig of backing none other than Neil Young not only on his most recent studio album The Monsanto Years, but his subsequent world tour as well – which was hailed as one of his best in recent years. As a follow up the self-proclaimed “Cowboy Hippie Surf Rock” act have released their third full-length effort Something Real via Royal Potato. The nine-track LP, which was recorded San Francisco’s William Westerfeld Mansion, whose previous residents included Janis Joplin, also features a guest spot by Young on the record’s closing song. The Hip Abduction – Gold Under The Glow

The Scoop: Tropical indie-pop act The Hip Abduction hail from St. Petersburg, Florida and combine pop, reggae and jam sounds with an emphasis on African stringed instruments. The group’s sophomore studio album captures the high-energy of the band’s signature sound but with an added indie rock twist. Gold Under The Glow was recorded in Nashville this past summer and produced by Dabney Morris (Wild Cub). Watch the video for Gold Under The Glow track “Before We Lose Our Mind”:

Kung Fu – Joyride

The Scoop: [Ed. Note: Joyride officially comes out March 15] In the wise words of Master Po in season one of the original Kung Fu series, “If a man dwells on the past, then he robs the present. But if a man ignores the past, he may rob the future. The seeds of our destiny are nurtured by the roots of our past.” That about sums it up for Kung Fu on their new album, Joyride. They liberally apply influences from past titans of funk and fusion like the Headhunters, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Weather Report while pushing the groove forward with elements of dance, electronica, and progressive musicianship. Joyride is the first Kung Fu album sans Todd Stoops on keys, but Beau Sasser fills the bench seamlessly. Have a listen to the hip-shaking “Speedbump Of Your Love” below:
