Release Day Picks: January 13th New Album Highlights

Each week Release Day Picks profiles new LPs and EPs Team JamBase will be checking out on release day Friday. This week we highlight new albums by The Infamous Stringdusters, The Flaming Lips, The Wood Brothers and Club d’Elf. Read on for more insight into the records we have all queued up to spin.
The Infamous Stringdusters – Laws Of Gravity

The Scoop: Last year, jamgrass act The Infamous Stringdusters recruited a bevy of female vocalists to guest with the group on their studio album Ladies & Gentlemen. Today, the band has returned to its roots with a new collection of original material dubbed Laws Of Gravity. The Stringdusters tapped Billy Hume to co-produce the collection of 13 songs, which was recorded in Nashville last year. Laws Of Gravity is said to showcase the members of the band as singers, writers and players. Watch The Stringdusters record the single “Gravity”:

The Flaming Lips – Oczy Mlody

The Scoop: Produced by The Flaming Lips and their longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann, Oczy Mlody is the proper follow-up the Oklhamoa City-based group’s last studio album of new material, 2013’s The Terror. In 2015 frontman Wayne Coyne and The Lips backed Miley Cyrus on her Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz LP and in 2014 they issued the collaborative, guest-filled covers album With a Little Help from My Fwends that re-created The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Cyrus can be heard on the closing track “We A Famly,” watch a lyric video for it here:

The Wood Brothers – Live At The Barn

The Scoop: Siblings Chris Wood (bass) and Oliver Wood (guitar) along with Jano Rix (drums) held a live concert at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York last August 19. The performance at The Barn was The Wood Brothers’ first appearance at the venue following the death of its founder, The Band drummer Levon Helm. The career-spanning show featured eight The Wood Brothers originals as well as a cover of “Ophelia” by The Band. “It’s so intimate and casual that it feels less like a concert and more like a living room jam,” Oliver Wood said about playing The Barn. “The spirit in there is strong, from the history and the intent that Levon had when he built the place to all the great music and musicians that have played there.” Check out “Ophelia” which Rolling Stone recently premeired:

Club d’Elf – Live At Club Helsinki

The Scoop: Boston dub-jazz outfit Club d’Elf has been regularly performing at Club Helsinki in Hudson, New York since 2001. Today, the band has issued a 2-disc live set recorded at the club simply titled Live At Club Helsinki. Core members Mike Rivard and Dean Johnston are joined by a band that includes keyboardist John Medeski, turntablist Mister Rourke, oud player/percussionist Brahim Fribgane and guitarist Duke Levine on the collection of 12 tracks. Club d’Elf work through material spanning multiple genres on the double album with an emphasis on Moroccan music. Watch the trippy video for the live album’s opening track, “Mogador”:
