Reid Genauer detailed a new album, Angels & Alibis, which will see a rolling release via Patreon Parade beginning October 2. The Northern California-based singer-songwriter also shared an album announcement video that included a solo acoustic performance of the title track.

Recorded at Tiny Telephone Studios in San Francisco in late February 2020 just before COVID-19 stay at home orders went into place, Genauer tapped Greg Loiacono (The Mother Hips, Green Leaf Rustlers) to produce Angels & Alibis with mixing from Scott Hirsch (Hiss Golden Messenger, Bill Frisell). Loiacono — who also plays guitar on the album — assembled the Great Forever Band consisting of Jim Bogios (Counting Crows, Sheryl Crow) on drums, Danny Eisenberg (Ryan Adams, Jonathan Richman, The Mother Hips) on keyboards and Brian Rashap (The Mother Hips) on bass to back Genauer on the album.

“Good dudes having a good ole time,” Reid wrote on his website. “Due to the unimaginable circumstances that unfolded just days after the sessions we’ve not seen one another since. As such the gilding of this lily has been and continues to be done from afar its been a hoot and a social hack that’s brought us together. It’s given us many occasions to shake off the lockdown shakedown shackles, laugh it up and lift ourselves for a spell.”

Genauer further detailed Angels & Alibis:

While the communal spirit of Angels & Alibis is a natural extension of Conspire to Smile, the sonic approach of this album is decidedly new. Like a 14 year old who finds himself 3 inches taller in six months, I had a creative growth spirt this year, grew a songbeard and hatched a new brood of songs. It’s a collection of 9 brand new songs and 3 older tunes that never found a home on a record. I asked my friend Greg Loiacono from The Mother Hips to produce the record. He’s got an ear-bending approach to writing, arranging and producing. With the help of Scott Hirsch (Hiss Golden Messenger, Bill Frisell)) mixing and the “Great Forever Band” Greg helped assemble we found a shared musical statement that is nothing short of uncommon. If nothing else its a fresh take on an old theme and a shinny object to focus on in the otherwise beige malaise of days and Tuesday binge drinking. To call it like it is I’m proud of hell as this record, beholden to the goodness it represents and relieved to know I am not (yet) in need of some kind of cognitive viagra to ignite the creative spark.
