Over the past year or so bassist Reed Mathis has been focusing on his Electric Beethoven project, in which he leads a band in “Classical Dance Music” interpretations of Beethoven material. Later this month, Mathis will switch it up by mixing EB dates with a new solo project titled Reed Mathis In The Now.
Mathis will be joined by old Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey band mate Josh Raymer on drums and guitarist Clay Welch for the In The Now performances. Look for setlists to include what is described in a press release as “highly improvised, in the moment, extended and experimental dance versions of classic songs.” Among them will be Reed originals dating back to his days in Tea Leaf Green as well as hits by Paul Simon, the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan and of course Ludwig Van Beethoven.
Reed Mathis’ inaugural In The Now run begins at the Funky Biscuit in Boca Raton on February 13. From there, the group brings the tour to Jacksonville, Charleston, Charlotte and Raleigh. Next up is a Reed Mathis & Electric Beethoven five-show swing featuring stops in Washington D.C., Brooklyn, Bridgeport, Albany and Lancaster between February 21 and 25. In The Now resumes touring activity on February 27 in Richmond, Virginia. Mathis and his latest project conclude the run with visits to Roanoke, Virginia on February 28; Lexington, North Carolina on March 1 and Georgia (at a venue to be announced) on March 2.
Reed Mathis shared the heart-warming story of how he became a full-time musician for the “Quit My Day Job” segment of the first episode of The JamBase Podcast.
