Red Hot Chili Peppers honored former tourmates Nirvana by premiering a cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on Saturday. The partial version of Nirvana’s breakthrough 1991 single brought the Chili Peppers’ set at Silverlake Conservatory Of Music in Los Angeles to a close.

The show on Saturday was an annual benefit for the Los Angeles music school co-founded by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea in 2001. Red Hot Chili Peppers were friends and colleagues with Nirvana, as both acts teamed with Pearl Jam for a dream mini-tour over the final days of 1991.

RCHP vocalist Anthony Kiedis began “Smells Like Teen Spirit” with a portion of his mesh shirt draped over his head as he sang the first verse. Guitarist John Frusciante then took over lead vocals for the chorus to bring the brief cover to its conclusion. “That’s it for us. Thanks for coming,” Kiedis informed the crowd as the Chili Peppers left the stage following their career-spanning 11-song performance.
