Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Sunday. RHCP unveiled their Eddie Van Halen tribute song “Eddie” during their festival play at Zilker Park in the Texas capital.
Red Hot Chil Peppers kicked off their set with a jam followed by “Can’t Stop” from their 2002 album, By The Way, along with additional favorites “Dani California” and “Scar Tissue.” The quartet then turned to their 2022 album, Unlimited Love, for “Aquatic Mouth Dance.” The band also played “Black Summer” and “The Heavy Wing” off the first of two LPs in 2022.
Next, guitarist John Frusciante offered a solo rendition of The Ramones’ “I Remember You.” Following “Snow ((Hey Oh))” from 2006’s Stadium Arcadium, RHCP took it back to 1995 with a cut,”Pea,” off their record that year, One Hot Minute, before debuting their Eddie Van Halen tribute song. “Eddie” is set to appear on the band’s second album of 2022, Return Of The Dream Canteen, which arrives on Friday (October 14).
Frusciante, bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith linked up on the intro to “Eddie” before frontman Anthony Kiedis took over on the lyrics, which trace the early career of the guitar great. Frusciante capped off the debut with an impassioned guitar solo featuring his own spin on some of Eddie’s iconic techniques. RHCP closed out their main set with classics “Californication” and “Give It Away” before returning to encore with “By The Way.”
