Red Hot Chili Peppers played “Black Summer” and “Can’t Stop” at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards last night (Sunday, August 28). The ceremony was held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and saw the band honored with this year’s Global Icon Award.

Last night marked the Chili Peppers’ first appearance at the VMAs since 2000. Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin introduced the band and gave them the Global Icon Award. Drummer Chad Smith used his time accepting the award to shout out his friend, late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. “There’s another musical global icon and his name is Taylor Hawkins,” Chad Smith said. “I want to dedicate this to Taylor and his family. I love them and I miss him every day, and fly on, Hawk. Fly on, brother.”
