Railroad Earth Welcomes Guests & Covers ‘Box Of Rain’ At The Capitol Theatre

Railroad Earth rolled into The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on Saturday. The jamgrass act welcomed opener/guitarist Tom Hamilton and keyboardist Michael Bellar during the second set and sealed the show with “Box of Rain.”

Tom Hamilton has been aboard the Railroad Earth train for the past three concerts beginning with a show in the band’s native New Jersey followed by a Brooklyn Bowl play. Michael Bellar is an in-demand New York City-based keyboardist who has collaborated with RRE in the past along with Amos Lee, Fred Wesley, Oliver Wood, Magpie Salute and more.

Both musicians emerged three songs into Railroad’s second frame at The Cap, beginning with “Addin’ My Voice.” Bellar joined Matt Slocum in key world, manning the Hammond organ. Following frontman Todd Sheaffer leading the band through the song, Hamilton laced the tune with bluesy riffs, traded licks with fiddler Tim Carbone and brought the slow-burner to a boil to cap the song.

While Hamilton would depart, Bellar stuck around for three more tunes: “Saddle of the Sun,” “Cold Water” and “Farewell to Isinglass.” RRE loaded The Cap concert with additional favorites such as opener “Bird in a House,” “Mighty River” and “Hard Livin.” The band wrapped the second frame with “Elko.”

For the encore, Railroad Earth nodded to late Grateful Dead bassist and collaborator Phil Lesh — whose son Grahame recently led an all-star tribute to his dad at The Cap, one of Phil’s favorite haunts — with a performance of “Box of Rain.” Check that out below:
