Punch Brothers Prep 1st All-Instrumental Album ‘The Unsung Adventures’ & Roll Out ‘New Bike’

Punch Brothers will release their seventh album, The Unsung Adventures Of Punch Brothers, via Nonesuch Records on July 24. The Grammy-winning Americana quintet previewed the lyric-less record by sharing its lead single, “New Bike.”

The 11-track, self-produced effort marks the group’s first all-instrumental album and first to follow the 2023 addition of fiddler Brittany Haas to the band. Punch Brothers — Haas, mandolinist Chris Thile, guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert and banjoist Noam Pikelny — recorded the album at the idyllic Guilford Sound Studio in Vermont last fall and winter.

Founding member Chris Thile described The Unsung Adventures in a press release, stating:

“This music is the result of what feels to me like our deepest but also most joyful exploration of the American string band in the twenty years we’ve been making music together. Something about the dichotomy of all the water under the bridge plus a new, brilliant teammate in Brittany. We all felt like kids in a candy store … so many possibilities and so much energy with which to pursue them, except with the kind of collective discipline and clarity of intent that only decades of collaboration affords.”

Out now is “New Bike,” the lead single and opening track from The Unsung Adventures Of Punch Brothers. “We discovered the first theme of ‘New Bike’ during one of the first writing sessions for Unsung Adventures and it seemed thesis-statement-y from the jump,” Thile said of the song.

“It’s downright euphoric to play and reminds me of being allowed to ride my new Diamondback Topanga mountain bike to the library for the first time when I was ten years old. We get that much of a thrill out of it … and good Lord, when Britt takes off towards the end of the secondary gesture? WHEEEEEE!!!”

Punch Brothers return to the road on May 14 to kick off an extensive spring tour in Morristown, New Jersey. The group will mix headline shows and festival appearances over the coming months.
