Seattle folk-rockers The Head and the Heart recently taped their second appearance on the long-running music television program Austin City Limits. The band’s set came just a few days after the death of a hero in their hometown, Chris Cornell, so The Head & The Heart worked a tribute to the Soundgarden frontman into their performance.
In the middle of the set, guitarist Matt Gervais told a story of being a youngster in Seattle and seeing Cornell and Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron hanging out on their street. Gervais and his friends ran into their basement to jam on Soundgarden’s “Fell On Black Days” in an attempt to impress the musicians. Matt shared what happened next, “About a minute later, we see Chris Cornell come lumbering into the room and with a sly little smile, he says, ‘You guys are playing it a little fast.’ It was an amazing moment for a kid, if you can imagine. We got to chat with them for a little while and get a sense of who they were as people, which is an amazing thing. And he was nothing but the sweetest person in the world. I always thought we’d get the chance to meet him again, but as we know now, we’re not gonna get that chance.”
The Head & The Heart then launched into Temple Of The Dog’s “Hunger Strike”:
