Pro-Shot Full Show Video: Dave Matthews Band Focuses On ‘Come Tomorrow’ At Camden Finale

By Scott Bernstein Jun 17, 2018 5:13 am PDT

Since Dave Matthews Band doesn’t issue official recordings of each show and rarely allows webcasts, fans haven’t been given much of an opportunity to see the new lineup in action outside of attending the shows themselves. What a concept! Last night, those who haven’t been able to make it to catch DMB ’18 in concert had a chance to watch the group’s Saturday night performance at the BB&T Pavilion in Camden, New Jersey thanks to a free webcast shared by the band and powered by nugs.tv. The free webcast came in honor of the recent release of the group’s Come Tomorrow studio album and unsurprisingly there were plenty of tunes from the album that made the setlist.

The big change to the lineup between the 2016 and 2018 iterations are the departure of violinist Boyd Tinsley and the addition of keyboardist Buddy Strong. DMB started with a keyboardist (Peter Griesar) until 1993 and then toured with Butch Taylor from 1998 to 2008, but Buddy plays more organ than either Greisar or Taylor, providing a different tone to the group’s music especially with the lack of fiddle.

Dave Matthews Band opened with the recently revived Come Together track “Again & Again,” which was known by fans as “Bob Law” until the new album’s tracklist surfaced. Next up was “One Sweet World,” a song that sounds vastly different in 2018 with Strong’s electric piano and organ stylings. The seven-piece then plucked “Seven” from 2009’s Big Whiskey & The GrooGrux King before it was right back to Come Tomorrow for “Do You Remember.” Rashawn Ross shined on the “Crush” that followed, the fourth most-played song at Camden for DMB (“Jimi Thing” x17, “Grey Street” and “Two Step” x16, “Crush” x15).

“Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)” served as the lead single and introduction for many to Come Tomorrow. Dave has performed the song at every single show this tour with the exclusion of Wednesday night in New Hampshire. DMB fit “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)” into Saturday’s set ahead of staples “#41” and “Don’t Drink The Water.” Drummer Carter Beauford turned it up a notch on both leading Dave to introduce him earlier than usual to the typical huge applause from the DMB faithful. Next came the title track from “Come Tomorrow” and the tour’s second “Lie In Our Graves.”

Dave Matthews Band’s 19-song main set in Camden on Saturday featured a total of seven songs found on Come Tomorrow with two different ones played on Friday in Camden. “Can’t Stop,” “Come On Come On” and “Idea Of You” were the final Come Tomorrow tunes fit late into the main set. The backend of DMB’s Camden finale also featured late ’00s gems “Steady As We Go,” “Lying In The Hands Of God,” “Stand Up (Go For It)” and “Why I Am.” Beauford was once again the focus on two beloved favorites that ended the set: “The Best Of What’s Around” and “Ants Marching.”

The biggest surprise of Saturday’s concert came to start the encore. Dave led the group through the tour debut of “Digging A Ditch” from 2002’s Busted Stuff, a song that had gone missing since August 30, 2016. Buddy’s electric piano and organ gave the tune new life. DMB then said farewell with the familiar “Pantala Pampa Naga” > “Rapunzel” sequence. The band now has a little break, as they don’t return to the stage until Friday night.
