Prince Ends 1985 Tour With 20 Minute ‘Purple Rain’ In Miami

While Prince was notorious for his dislike of services such as YouTube that shared his music for free, a bevy of video and audio from The Purple One’s career have surfaced on the site in the weeks since his tragic death. One such gem is what appears to be soundboard audio of the sizzling rendition of “Purple Rain” that ended his tour of the same name at the Orange Bowl in Miami on April 7, 1985.

Prince & The Revolution played 98 concerts between the start of the tour in Detroit on November 4, 1984 and the Easter Sunday performance at the Orange Bowl. The Purple One focused on material from the soundtrack of his Purple Rain movie and each show ended with “Purple Rain.” Prince and his band would take their time with the “Purple Rain” closers with many versions expanded beyond the 20-minute mark. The Miami show was no exception and gives us yet another example of just how good of a guitarist Prince was. You could almost hear Prince empty the tank after a long and extensive tour.
