“I see goblins in a spectacular array of color and fearsomeness” bassist Les Claypool said, looking out over the crowd at Brooklyn Steel. Primus played the venue on Halloween, touring behind their new album The Desaturating Seven an aptly themed ode to seven color stealing goblins.
The album is the first original material that Claypool, guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde and drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander have released together since Tales From The Punchbowl was issued in 1995.
Primus started the show with “American Life,” and kept the crowd animated through a career-spanning 11-song opening set that included favorites such as “Lee Van Cleef,” “On the Tweek Again,” and “My Name is Mud”. The band teased “Too Many Puppies” switched into “Sgt. Baker,” and “Hello Skinny,” before returning to finish “Too Many Puppies.” The first set closed out with the Tales From The Punchbowl track “Over the Electric Grapevine” that incorporated teases of “Nutbutter’s House of Treats” and “Shake Hands With Beef.”
Throughout the show, Claypool made comments about the crowd’s costumes, calling one concert goer a “handsome fella” when he saw that he came dressed as Woodstock 1994 Claypool. After a 10 minute set break Primus returned to play their new album which was inspired by the 1978 children’s book The Rainbow Goblins in its entirety. The The Desaturating Seven set featured psychedelic images from the book projected behind the band and giant translucent trees adorned the stage. Adding to the Halloween ambiance, stage hands were dressed in floor length black robes.
Primus closed their show with a two song encore, playing “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers” and “Tommy the Cat” off the Sailing The Sea Of Cheese album.
