Portugal. The Man Covers The Beatles In Charlottesville
By Andy Kahn Aug 22, 2017 • 1:27 pm PDT
Last night Portugal. The Man performed at Sprint Pavilion in Charlottesville, Virginia. The band donated 100 percent of their proceeds from the concert to the Heal Charlottesville Fund at Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. The evening’s performance ended with PTM performing a moving cover of The Beatles’ classic “Blackbird.”
Prior to Monday’s show the band announced their intention to perform in the city that recently saw deadly violent protests. A message reading “FUCK HATRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS ONE IS FOR CHARLOTTESVILLE” was projected on the screen behind the band prior to their addressing the audience, stating:
Words are hard to come by at a time like this, I just hope that the peace that this city feels now and the tranquility and the joy and the love that you guys have is the love that you feel for the rest of time. This city has been so beautiful to us and so good to us — from the bottom of our hearts, you’re our family and we feel at home here.
Portugal. The Man then offered a stirring cover of The Beatles’ poignant song “Blackbird.”
