Plenty Of Collaborations At Night One Of Christmas Jam
By Scott Bernstein Dec 14, 2013 • 8:00 am PST

Haynes welcomed singer-songwriter Ray Sisk for a duet on Sisk’s “Glory Road” to kick off the show. Gov’t Mule has closed many a Christmas Jam, but this time around they were were the first band to take the stage at the U.S. Cellular Center. Mule was joined by saxophonist Bill Evans and keyboardist Ike Stubblefield for a cover of moe.’s “Opium.” Blues singer Keb Mo was up next and welcomed John Scofield for “Every Morning” and “Perpetual Blues Machine.” Scofield’s Uberjam Band followed with a five-song set.
While the stage was cleared for the return of the Phil Lesh Quintet, Haynes and Gregg Allman treated the capacity crowd to a set that included a cover of Neil Young’s “The Needle And The Damage Done.” Keb Mo sat in with the pair on “I Can’t Be Satisfied.” The “Q” mixed songs from their lone studio release of original material with Dead classics over the course of the two-hour set. Widespread Panic closed out Night One of the Christmas Jam with a 90+ minute set of their own. Haynes lent Panic a hand on “Angels On High” and a cover of ZZ Top’s “Jesus Just Left Chicago.” The Aquarium Rescue Unit, Gregg Allman and Xmas Jam All-Stars, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Mule and more are set to perform at tonight’s second night of the Christmas Jam. You can watch from home via a TourGigs. We’ll have much more from Asheville in the coming days.
