Pigeons Playing Ping Pong wrapped a two-night “The Who Fighters” Halloween run on Saturday night with a concert at New Haven, Connecticut’s College Street Music Hall. The Baltimore-based jam quartet welcomed special guests the Funky Dawgz Brass Band horns and guitarist Brandon “Taz” Niederauer as part of the show featuring The Who and Foo Fighters classics interspersed with PPPP originals.

All four members of the band — guitarists Greg Ormont and Jeremy Schon, bassist Ben Carrey and drummer Alex Petropulos — sported flight suits emblazoned with The Who, Foo Fighters and PPPP iconography, including the “hawk” in honor of late FF drummer Taylor Hawkins. After kicking off the night with “Henrietta,” the four-piece put their own spin on a debut cover of The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” Pigeons then dropped their premiere take on Foo Fighters’ 2005 hit “Best Of You” within original “Skinner.”

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong left the ensuing “Poseidon” unfinished as they segued into their first full cover of The Who’s “Pinball Wizard,” which in turn gave way to staple “Ocean Flows.” Year-old original “Donkey Hotel” then bled into the John Entwistle-penned Who gem “Boris The Spider” as spiderwebs and a giant spider made their way through the crowd. Both “Boris The Spider” and the rendition of Foo Fighters’ “All My Life” that followed to end the set were PPPP debuts.

The four-piece got Saturday’s second set underway by encapsulating Foo Fighters’ “My Hero” within “Su Casa.” Brandon “Taz” Niederauer then came out for the Pigeons Playing Ping Pong debut of “Eminence Front.” Taz shredded a monstrous solo on the song from The Who’s 1982 album It’s Hard. Schon took a fierce solo of his own before engaging in a duel with Niederauer. Taz stuck around for a transition into the end of the “Poseidon” left unfinished earlier.

One more The Who and Foo Fighters cover debuts were in store before the second set drew to a close. The former’s “The Seeker” came in the midst of “Fun In Funk,” while the latter’s “Everlong” connected “Sir Real” and “The Town.” Pigeons Playing Ping Pong had another surprise for the encore as they were joined by the Funky Dawgz Brass Band horns for a version of the beloved “F.U.” that saw the band and their guests weave into the Bee Gees’ “You Should Be Dancing.” Foo Fighters covered “You Should Be Dancing” under their Dee Gees moniker for the 2021 release Hail Satin.
