Pigeons Playing Ping Pong got their movie themed Flockbuster concert run underway on Saturday at the 8×10 in their hometown of Baltimore. The show featured the funk quartet playing iconic movie music along with songs related to the silver screen and served as a fundraiser for the 8×10.

Flockbuster was originally slated for Halloween weekend but had to be rescheduled due to a member of the crew testing positive for COVID-19. PPPP — guitarists Greg Ormont and Jeremy Schon, bassist Ben Carrey and drummer Alex Petropulos — got things underway with a humorous Flockbuster intro video featuring a number of PPPP movie parodies. The music kicked off with the “20th Century Fox” theme which led into the band’s own “Burning Up My Time” and “Moonwalk” before paying tribute to Rocky with the deubt of “Eye Of The Tiger” which in turn led into “Also Sprach Zarathustra” from 2001: A Space Odyssey ahead of a return to “Burning Up My Time” and closing out the continuous opening segment with “Melting Lights” which contained a “Layla” tease. The first set also featured a Space Jam reference, the debut of “That Thing You Do!” and an homage to legendary composer John Williams with both the Star Wars (which the band had not played since NYE 2015) and Indiana Jones (a debut) themes.

The second began with Pigeons’ “Lowdown.” Then, “Kiwi” kicked off another segued run with “Skipjack” encompassing the debut of the Austin Powers version of “Just The Two of Us.” Next, the band’s “Dawn A New Day” came ahead of another debut in the iconic Mission Impossible Theme which led into the unveiling of Japaneese rock artist Hotei’s “Battle Without Honor Or Humanity” (also the name of a Japanese film) before heading back into “Mission Impossible.” PPPP’s classic cover of the Ghostbusters theme — with their own “Su Casa” in the middle — would close down the second frame. PPPP remerged for an encore of “Avalanche” before heading into “Hedwig’s Theme” (also by John Williams) from Harry Potter and returning to “Avalanche” to bring night one of Flockbuster to a close.
