Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and The Infamous Stringdusters delivered the penultimate concert of their late spring joint run at Levitt Pavilion in Westport, Connecticut on Sunday. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong brought out members of the Stringdusters, support band Melt and Connecticut’s own Eggy during their show-closing set.
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong launched their performance with a pairing of “Somethin’ For Ya” and “The Town,” before welcoming their first guest, banjo player Chris Pandolfi of the Infamous Stringdusters. Panda joined Pigeons Playing Ping Pong for the latter’s “Fall In Place,” a track off their 2024 album Day In Time. The tune carries a West African vibe, well suited for the banjo which has its origins in West Africa.
Pigeons then went it alone for “Show Me” and “Henrietta” ahead of a cover of The Who’s “Eminence Front,” on which they brought out guitarist Jake Brownstein of Eggy. Led by Pigeons Playing Ping Pong frontman Greg Ormont, the jam saw Brownstein reeling off an edgy solo before swapping riffage with Pigeons guitarist Jeremy Schon.
Following set closer, “Ocean Flows,” Pigeons Playing Ping Pong presided over the finale which saw the band unveiling a cover of the Marvin Gaye classic “What’s Going On.” The performance featured the full Infamous Stringdusters ensemble as well as Melt guitarist Marlo Shankweiler and vocalist Veronica Stewart-Frommer.
