Pigeons Playing Ping Pong stopped by The Echo in Los Angeles on Friday. Yesterday was “311 Day” (3/11) and PPPP busted out a cover of 311’s “All Mixed Up,” welcomed members of Sophistafunk and delivered an eventful encore.
Pigeons kicked off the show with a three-song set-opening segment of “Something For Ya,” the recently debuted “Hell Yeah” and relatively new tune “Move Like That.” The band then unshelved a cover of 311’s “All Mixed Up” for the occasion. In a social media post, the band noted that they possibly played the song last in 2008 or 2009. PPPP wrapped up the set with a trio of staples, “Bad For You,” “Julia” and “Avalanche.”
Newer tune “Day In Time” launched the second set followed by “Whoopie” and another relatively new tune “My Own Way.” PPPP then offered the spooky theme song from X-Files, which kicked off a three-song segment that also contained “The Hop” and the vintage “F.U.” The Psychology cut saw the quartet welcoming Sophistafunk’s Tommy Weeks on saxophone and Adam Gold, the latter handling his Moog synthesizer like an accordion. Staples “High As Five” and “King Kong” capped off the second set.
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong would return for an eventful encore which got underway with “Twich” which gave way to Pink Floyd’s “Echoes.” The Floyd classic encompassed a bust out of Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter,” last time played on Halloween 2015, as per Phantasy Tour. After a return to “Twitch,” the band concluded the four-song encore and evening with “The Liquid.”
