Wavy Gravy 80th Birthday Celebration :: 5.22.16 :: SOMO Center :: Rohnert Park, CA
Following a celebration of counter-culture icon Wavy Gravy’s 80th birthday at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California on May 15, a second multi-band event to benefit Seva was held this past Sunday to fete the hippie clown at SOMO Center in Rohnert Park, California. Yonder Mountain String Band, Steve Earle, John Popper, New Riders Of The Purple Sage, Dead Winter Carpenters, Achilles Wheel and others each performed in honor of Wavy. Highlights included Popper jamming with YMSB on Blues Traveler’s “Runaround,” the harmonica wiz teaming with T Sisters, Achille’s Wheel and New Riders Of The Purple Sage, Strangefolk’s Jon Trafton guesting with Dead Winter Carpenters on “Friend Of The Devil” and “Golden Road” and more as well as Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen talking of the history of his company’s Wavy Gravy ice cream. John Popper’s time on stage with Yonder also included renditions of “Kentucky Mandolin,” “For What It’s Worth” and “Dancing In The Moonlight.” Check out a gallery of Sterling Munksgard’s photos from this past Sunday’s concert as well as a collection of videos from the event:
