On Friday night Umphrey’s McGee headlined Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado and sold out the famed venue for the second year in a row. The Chicago rockers took the Red Rocks stage after opening sets from Papadosio and TAUK. UM kicked off their first set with a fitting cover of “In The Hall Of The Mountain King,” a song originally performed by Edvard Grieg that the band hadn’t performed in 250 shows (last time played -February 17, 2013). The first set continued with the start of a “Puppet String” that wouldn’t be completed until the end of the encore. Umphrey’s opening stanza also included an inventive “Mulche’s Odyssey” > “Higgins” > “Mulche’s Odyssey” sequence as well as the pairing of “Pay The Snucka” > “Rocker Part 2,” “The Pequod” > “Pay The Snucka.”

UM came out for the second set with a “Ringo” that featured teases of GN’R’s “Paradise City.” They then treated the capacity crowd to the alternate version of “Cut The Cable.” LD Jefferson Waful’s spectacular light show was on full display during a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” that led into the end of “Ringo.” Umphrey’s was joined by old friend Steve Krojniewski for the “Bad Friday” that came next. The second set ended with another inventive song sequence as “Believe The Lie” was snuck into the middle of “Divisions.” A “The Triple Wide” > “Puppet String” encore brought the show to a close.
