Photos & Setlist: Dead & Company Kick Off NYE Run In San Francisco

On Sunday night Dead & Company returned to the stage for the first time since ending their debut tour late last month in Las Vegas. Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann teamed with John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti to begin a four-show New Year’s Run with the first of two shows at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

Dead & Company came out of the gates with “Truckin’,” which led into a Mayer-sung “Cold Rain & Snow.” John stayed in the spotlight for “Brown-Eyed Women,” before Weir fronted the group on “Black Throated Wind.” Mayer was back up front for a reggae- tinged “Standing On The Moon,” while “Cassidy” gave the band a chance to stretch its improvisational legs. A raucous “U.S. Blues” brought the first set of the run to a close.

The Sunday sermon of “Samson & Delilah” kicked off a pre-“Drums/Space” second set sequence that also included “Deal,” “He’s Gone,” “Estimated Prophet” and “Eyes Of The World.” “Deal” featured a powerful organ solo from Chimenti, while the lengthy “Eyes” gave Oteil, John and Jeff each a chance to lead the action. The Rhythm Devils then stepped into the spotlight for a wild “Drums” that included vocals from Hart over tribal rhythms. A dark and eerie “Space” then gave way to “Black Peter” sung by Weir. Next, Bobby and John shared vocals on a “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad” second set closer. Mayer and Weir each came back for the encore sporting acoustic guitars for “Ripple,” before the band welcomed Blues Traveler frontman John Popper to the stage for a “Casey Jones” finale. Dead & Company returns to Bill Graham Civic Auditorium tonight.
