Both performances occurred during an important era of Phish’s career. The band is releasing the shows to give back to Western North Carolina and the West Coast of Florida, which were left devasted by Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton respectively.
Former Phish FOH engineer Paul Languedoc recorded the shows. Fred Kevorkian mastered Languedoc’s recording for release.
On August 2, 1993, Phish began a landmark month with a concert at the intimate Ritz Theatre in Tampa, Florida. Drummer Jon Fishman battled a fever that had the band considering whether to cancel the show. Thankfully, the quartet moved forward and turned in a memorable performance filled with such rarities as “Brother,” “Dog Log” and “La Grange” as well as a wild “Mike’s Song” featuring a guest appearance from heavy metal singer Joe Rooney of First Born.
Phish’s lone show on the campus of Appalachian State University took place just over a year later on October 26, 1994. The performance at the school’s Varsity Gym was highlighted by jam-chart worthy versions of “It’s Ice,” “Run Like An Antelope,” “Reba” and “David Bowie.”
