The 36th and final episode of Season One of the Under The Scales podcast featured an interview with one of JamBase’s founders, Andy Gadiel. Andy’s Phish Page was one of the leading source of information about the Vermont jam quartet on the newly-burgeoning World Wide Web in the late ’90s. Gadiel talked about his Phish page, the origins of JamBase and more with Phish lyricist Tom Marshall to close out the inaugural season of Under The Scales.

The episode started with a discussion of life for music freaks before the days of the internet including Andy displaying the “analog copy” of his setlist notebook. Phish was one of the first bands to grow alongside the internet including the advent of Phish.net, the AOL Phish Bowl and Gadiel’s page. The talk focused on the early days of Phish on the internet and how Andy came to become a fan of the band and started a website providing concert listings for live music lovers and information for Phish fans.

Andy then told Tom and the listeners about his involvement with Jambands.com and how a page of other bands off his Phish page led to the creation of JamBase. Gadiel and Marshall also discussed the Great Went and of course, the Page Page. All told the 60-minute conversation was a fascinating one with a deep dive into the early days of Phish on the internet beyond Phish.net and the origins of our fair website.
