Virtuosic guitarist Trevor Shepich will soon graduate Perry High School in Perry, Michigan near Lansing. The youngster played his final school band concert late last month, where he showcased his massive instrumental and compositional skills by debuting his arrangement of the Phish song “Fuego” with the ensemble.
Shepich first stepped into the spotlight in May of 2021, when Billy Strings brought out Trevor to guest with his band at a concert in Louisville. “I’ve been seeing Trevor around the scene for a bit now, picking all over the place. He’s a great player,” Strings told the crowd that night. “I saw him out here in the crowd the last two nights and figured let’s jam.” The guitarist went on to serve as Artist-At-Large at last year’s Lightning Bug Music Festival.
The high school senior is a big Phish fan with “Back On The Train” one of the songs he played with Billy Strings in Louisville. Shepich was asked by Andrew Barnhart, the director of the Perry High School Concert Band, to put together a piece for the group to perform at his final concert.
“I decided there would be no better way to go about this than arranging one of my favorite songs, ‘Fuego,’ by my favorite band, Phish, for my school’s concert band to perform,” Trevor explained on his Facebook page. He even worked in the klezmer section from Phish’s live versions of “Scent Of A Mule” within his arrangement.
“Although this project isn’t perfect (I had no concept of how difficult the piece would be for my band when writing as I had never composed for concert band before), it’s important for me to share this if only as a milestone in my musical career,” Shepich added. Watch the “Fuego” performance below:
Trevor Shepich plans to attend Western Michigan University in the fall.
