Phish returned to Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Friday night for the second of three shows at the historic venue that brings Fall Tour 2013 to a close. In boxing they use the phrase “pound-for-pound” to describe the best boxers regardless of the weight class they fight in. Last night’s Phish show “pound-for-pound” stands up with many of most lauded in the band’s history despite what era they took place in. On Friday night the Vermonters delivered an impressive all-around gig that had it all just one night after shocking the fanbase with a performance of 12 new originals.

Looking for a highly-exploratory jam that shows off the jaw-dropping improvisational prowess Phish has displayed on this tour? The 20+ minute “Twist” that opened set two is your huckleberry. Want to hear the goofier side of Phish and the band just having a great time on tour? Cue up the tour’s first “Makisupa Policeman,” in which the quartet took guitarist Trey Anastasio’s banter about “bush” and ran with it into a full-on dub jam with both Anastasio and drummer Jon Fishman screaming and shouting. “Bush” references kept popping up throughout the rest of the set. How about teases and jams of popular rock songs? The monumental “Twist” saw the band jam on Queen/David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” and even offered a bit of “Get Back” by The Beatles. Earlier in the show, Phish worked quotes from Shaft into “Runaway Jim” harkening back to the famed Albany YEM from December 9, 1995. Overall Friday night’s show is one that should get plenty of repeated listens from Phish fans over the months and years to come. Tonight, Phish concludes the AC run and the tour at Boardwalk Hall.
