Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band Ring In 2017 In Hawaii

Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh ended 2016 by teaming with the Terrapin Family Band for a pair of shows in Hawaii. The second performance took place on New Year’s Eve at the Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu, where Lesh and the band rang in 2017 with three sets.

Phil Lesh was joined by the regular Terrapin Family Band lineup of guitarists Grahame Lesh and Ross James and drummer Alex Koford as well as keyboardist Jason Crosby and guitarist Scott Law. The band opened the first set with “Shakedown Street” sung by Grahame ahead of Ross leading “The Music Never Stopped” and Alex serving as frontman on “Ramble On Rose.” Phil had his first turn on lead vocals for “Box Of Rain,” which the ensemble worked into “Wharf Rat” and back again. Lesh and his group then finished the first set with a cover of Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.”

The second set began with an “Althea” sung by Scott Law. Next up was an “Estimated Prophet” > “Eyes Of The World” sequence before the band ended the set with “The Wheel” > “Terrapin Station” > “I Know You Rider.” When the group returned to the stage for their third and final set they were joined by someone dressed as a turtle or “Terrapin” as they counted down the final moments of 2016. A balloon drop heralded “Sugar Magnolia,” the Grateful Dead’s usual selection to start a new year. The Dead classics kept flowing with “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire On The Mountain” followed by “Saint Stephen” > “The Eleven” > “Saint Stephen.” Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band then ended the evening with “Not Fade Away.”
