Phil Lesh Teams With Preservation Hall Jazz Band & More At Capitol Theatre: Photos, Videos, Audio & Setlist

Last night Phil Lesh brought his ongoing “And Friends” project to his home away from home – The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York – to begin a two-night stand at the historic venue. The former Grateful Dead bass player was joined for the first time ever by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, as well as a number of familiar faces that included multi-instrumentalist Karl Denson, pedal steel wiz Robert Randolph, guitar-slinger Jackie Greene and multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby.

The meaty band kicked off their two-set performance with a formidable take on “Shakedown Street,” sung by Karl Denson. Next up Jackie Greene and Ross James teamed up to lead the ensemble through “Jack Straw,” which was followed by a take on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s anti-authoritarian anthem “Almost Cut My Hair,” and the Grateful Dead’s “Bertha” and “West L.A. Fadeaway.” The Preservation Hall Jazz Band made their first appearance of the night emerging for funky, horn-infused takes on The Band’s “Ophelia,” “Tennessee Jed” and “Samson & Delilah” to close out the set.

The eight-piece act opened their second set with a lengthy “Help” > “Slip” > “Frank,” followed by a monster must-hear “Viola Lee Blues” > “Cumberland Blues” > “Viola Lee Blues,” that was stretched out to almost a half hour. After a take on the Phil Lesh-sung classic “Unbroken Chain,” Pres Hall returned to the stage for a show-closing one-two punch of “Turn On Your Lovelight” > “Not Fade Away,” that also stretched out past the 20-minute mark.

Phil Lesh & Friends closed out the night with another song from The Band, with a group sing-along on “The Weight.” Lesh returns to the Cap tonight, where he’ll be joined by Karl Denson, Robert Randolph, Neal Casal, Ross James, Jason Crosby, Tony Leone, and Alex Koford.
