Audio, Video & Setlist: Phil Lesh Kicks Off Capitol Theatre Run With Medeski, Haynes, Krasno & More
By Scott Bernstein May 28, 2016 • 6:57 am PDT

On Friday night Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh kicked off a run of three Phil Lesh & Friends shows at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. Phil’s band for the first night saw him joined by guitarists Eric Krasno and Warren Haynes as well as keyboardist John Medeski, percussionist Alex Koford and drummer Tony Leone.
In typical Phil & Friends style the band started the show and the run with a jam. The group worked the blissful improv into a Lesh-sung “Franklin’s Tower” featuring Medeski on electric piano and organ. Warren then took a turn in the spotlight to lead a cover of “The Weight” by The Band. Kraz showed off both his vocal and guitar abilities on the “Alabama Getaway” that followed. Haynes returned to the forefront on “Blue Sky” and he shined on the version at The Cap on Friday. Lesh and his band brought the opening set of the run to a close with “Bird Song” > “All Along The Watchtower.”
The second set began with a sequence of early Dead in “Mason’s Children” > “Mountains Of The Moon” > “St. Stephen” before Phil led the group through one of his signature songs, “Unbroken Chain.” Warren then sung a tune he wrote with Lesh, “Spots Of Time,” ahead of another Allman Brothers Band classic “End Of The Line.” The “Stella Blue” that closed the second set was an emotional high point of the evening thanks to Haynes’ poignant vocals. Lesh and his ensemble then ended the night with a “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad” encore. Phil & Friends returns to The Cap tonight featuring a similar lineup which finds Melvin Seals making his debut in Lesh’s band. A webcast is available via nugs.tv.
