On Wednesday night, bassist Phil Lesh began the first of two January 2018 Phil Lesh & Friends runs at the Grate Room at his Terrapin Crossroads venue/restaurant in San Rafael, California. Phil was joined by Dead & Company keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, Chris Robinson Brotherhood drummer Tony Leone and guitarists Anders Osborne, Grahame Lesh and Stanley Jordan for Wednesday’s concert.
Deadheadland.com compiled the setlist and videos from which we learned the group opened with the early Dead favorite “Mason’s Children” and staples “Bertha” and “He’s Gone.” Anders Osborne then led the ensemble on a cover of Neil Young’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.” Next, Ross James of The Terrapin Family Band emerged to front the band on “New Minglewood Blues” ahead of a set-closing sequence of “Who Do You Love” and “New Speedway Boogie.”
Wednesday’s second set began with a Grahame-sung “Scarlet Begonias” before Anders was given lead vocal duties for “Fire On The Mountain.” Osborne also stepped up for “Shakedown Street” and blues standard “Going Down.” James came out once again to front “Samson & Delilah” ahead of an Anders-sung rendition of The Rolling Stones’ “Midnight Rambler.” Next up was a gorgeous cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” featuring vocals from Osborne and scatting and soloing from Stanley Jordan. Anders also led the “Sugaree” that closed the frame and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” encore that ended the evening.
