Phil Lesh & Friends Plays Surprise 1988 Set At Terrapin Crossroads

By Scott Bernstein Jun 8, 2016 9:05 am PDT

Last night Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh brought a version of his Phil Lesh & Friends project to Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California for a free show. Phil surprised attendees with a second set that featured a re-creation of a first set the Grateful Dead played in 1988.

As Deadheadland reports, the show started with a typical first set filled with such Grateful Dead classics as “Playing In The Band,” “Mountains Of The Moon” and “Sugar Magnolia.” During setbreak Phil took the stage with Jay Blakesberg who led a chat about the year 1988 in the Grateful Dead world. Lesh and his ensemble then re-created the first set the Dead performed at Laguna Seca in Monterey, California on July 31, 1988.

Phil’s band on Tuesday night featured Grahame Lesh and Stu Allen on guitar, Scott Guberman on keyboards as well as Alex Koford and Ezra Lipp on drums. The bassist is expected to recreate another set from 1988, perhaps the second set from July 31, this Sunday, June 12 at the Terrapin Backyard Summer Kickoff.
