Phil Lesh & Friends Pay Tribute To Grateful Dead 1979 At Terrapin

Phil Lesh & Friends’ series of shows honoring each year of Grateful Dead continued last night at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California; where the bassist and his band used the same setlist the Dead did on August 2, 1979 at the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta, Maine.

Following a discussion about the year 1979 featuring Lesh led by Jay Blakesberg, Phil took the stage with guitarists Stu Allen and Rob Eaton as well as keyboardist Rob Barraco and drummers Ezra Lipp and Alex Koford. During the discussion, Phil told the story of how keyboardist Brent Mydland joined the Grateful Dead. Barraco played the role of Mydland last night and added more organ and synth to the mix than he did last week when Phil & Friends honored 1978 Grateful Dead.

Allen sang the Jerry Garcia songs on Sunday, while Eaton handled lead vocals on Bob Weir tunes. Barraco didn’t sing lead on any of the songs played last night since Mydland didn’t front the Dead at any point on August 2, 1979. Last night’s show ended with a raucous “U.S. Blues” following Lesh’s “Donor Rap.” Terrapin Crossroads has yet to announce the date and lineup for Phil Lesh & Friends’ tribute to 1980.
