Phil Lesh & Friends Pay Tribute To 1984 Grateful Dead At Terrapin Crossroads

Phil Lesh & Friends continued a series of concerts honoring each year of the Grateful Dead’s career last night at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California. The Grateful Dead bassist and his band performed the same setlist the band played on October, 12, 1984 at Augusta Civic Center in Augusta, Maine for Monday night’s performance.

In typical fashion, the show started with a discussion about the year being honored between photographer Jay Blakesberg and Lesh. Phil told the story of how the planet Mars influenced the bust-out of “Dark Star” that year and Jerry Garcia’s reluctance to play it, recording sessions at Fantasy Studios, changes to band management, establishing the Tapers Section and the Rex Foundation and more.

The original Dead show from 1984 featured the band’s final performance of the traditional “On The Road Again” in the first set as well as the rarely played Brent Mydland original “Don’t Need Love” and a memorable “Morning Dew” in the second set. Phil held down the bass backed by guitarists Stu Allen and Scott Law, keyboardist Scott Guberman and drummers Ezra Lipp and Cochrane McMillan for the October, 12, 1984 interpretation.
