Phil Lesh Discusses Jerry Garcia Intervention & Arrest Ahead Of Grateful Dead 1985 Tribute

On Friday night, bassist Phil Lesh continued a series of Phil Lesh & Friends shows honoring each year of the Grateful Dead at his Terrapin Crossroads venue in San Rafael, California. The re-creation of a legendary Dead show from 1985 was preceded by a talk featuring Lesh in which the bassist discussed an intervention held with Jerry Garcia.

As with all shows in the series, the evening began with Jay Blakesberg moderating a discussion with Phil about the year 1985. Lesh told the story of an intervention with Garcia in which Jerry’s reaction was essentially “fuck you.” The bassist also shared the tale of freeing Jerry from jail after the guitarist was busted by police outside San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and a prank he played with Brent Mydland on Bob Weir. Phil Lesh & Friends re-created the Grateful Dead’s performance from Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland on June 30, 1985. Last night’s band featured Phil joined by guitarists Stu Allen and Grahame Lesh along with keyboardist Scott Guberman and drummers Ezra Lipp and Alex Koford. Allen handled Jerry tunes, while Grahame sang the Bobby songs. Guberman stepped up for the cover of “Gimme Some Lovin’.”
