Perpetual Groove played their first show in over two years last night as the band returned to the stage at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia for the first of two consecutive performances. The quartet mixed a pair of new covers and an old one with original material from throughout their career.

The band, which consists of guitarist Brock Butler, keyboardist Matt McDonald, drummer Albert Suttle and bassist Adam Perry, kicked off the festivities and the next phase of PGroove with the debut cover of Pearl Jam’s “Release.” The song’s themes of closure and letting go of the past made it a fitting choice as opener. “Speed Queen” followed as the first original of the band’s new era. A string of “A Day The Way,” “Out Here” and “Andromeda” led into “Holy Ship” -a song PGroove debuted shortly before the hiatus which deserved and now will get a beter fate. “Sun Dog,” a tune which dates back over a decade, brought the set to a close.

For the second set, the main focus was an expansive “Green Tea” segment that featured “Orange Wedge” and “Macumba” within it. The closing stanza also featured the group’s beloved cover of “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” by Talking Heads and originals “Life,” “Lemurs” and “Stealy Man.” Perpetual Groove closed out the evening with an encore of “Space Paranoids” and “Trouble.” The latter was the debut of a TV On The Radio cover with a refrain of “everything’s gonna be okay.”

#PGroove takes the stage for the first time in 2 years.
