Paul’s cameo in Austin included takes on the Conway Twitty/Loretta Lynn duet “You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly” and Ernest Tubb’s “Waltz Across Texas.” Last night in Midland, Simon came out and told the crowd “I couldn’t resist coming back.” Paul said, “I enjoyed playing with the band so much,” and then turned to Martin and added, “not so much you,” to rapturous applause. Simon then asked Martin if he’d be agreeable to playing one of his songs. Steve Martin polled the audience about whether they’d like to hear one of Paul’s tunes and the crowd responded with loud cheers. The hilarious Steve Martin/Paul Simon banter continued as the comedian told the NYC native he wasn’t familiar with the song “Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard,” so Paul provided Steve with a tambourine to play along.
Watch the stellar “Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard” laid down by Paul Simon, Steve Martin, Edie Brickell and the Steep Canyon Rangers in Midland, TX last night:
