The second weekend of Desert Trip in Indio, California continued on Friday night with full shows from Paul McCartney and Neil Young and Promise of The Real. McCartney welcomed Young to share the stage just as he did the previous Saturday and he also brought out Rihanna for a duet.
After a few shows where he eschewed a solo acoustic start to his set, Neil Young brought the format back for his performance on Saturday night. Young kicked off a 20-song set by switch between piano, guitar and pump solo for solo renditions of “After The Gold Rush,” “Heart Of Gold,” “Old Man” and more. The Canadian native then brought out Promise Of The Real for the rest of the set. Neil Young and Promise Of The Real mixed recently debuted material such as “Neighborhood,” “Show Me” and “Texas Rangers” with hits “Harvest Moon,” “Helpless,” “Cowgirl In The Sand” and “Like A Hurricane.” Young and POTR ended the set with “Rockin’ In The Free World.”
Paul McCartney played a total of 38 songs over the course of his career-spanning set at Desert Trip on Saturday. Macca performed two tunes for the first time on his One On One Tour, The Beatles classic “Got To Get You Into My Life” and Little Richard’s “Rip It Up.” McCartney last covered “Rip It Up” in 2009 as per Setlist.fm.
For the past two years “FourFiveSeconds” has been a staple of Macca’s setlist. McCartney collaborated on the song with Kanye West and Rihanna. On Saturday Paul brought out Rihanna to help with “FourFiveSeconds.” The pop star wasn’t the evening’s only guest as later in the night McCartney welcomed Neil Young to the stage to reprise his sit-in from the first weekend of Desert Trip. Young contributed to “A Day In The Life,” “Give Peace A Chance” and the second-ever version of “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?” Macca has played live (following its debut the previous weekend).
Desert Trip concludes tonight with sets from The Who and Roger Waters.
