Opening Night | The Smashing Pumpkins Launch Acoustic Tour

Billed as The Smashing Pumpkins: In Plainsong – An Acoustic-Electro Evening, The Smashing Pumpkins began their first acoustic tour last night at Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda, New York. Not only serving as the first concert of the tour, it was also the first show for new members, bassist Katie Cole and drummer Robin Diaz

The night began with frontman Billy Corgan banging out “Tonight, Tonight” on piano before moving on to two songs he debuted with his band Zwan, “Freedom Ain’t What It Used to Be” and “For Your Love.” Newer tracks like  “Drum + Fife” were juxtaposed next to more rarely played old tracks, including a suite of songs from the band’s 1998 album Adore. The Smashing Pumpkins’ deep cut “Sparrow” was among the live debuts last night as well as “Jersey Shore” and “Run2Me.” Corgan also mixed in songs from his solo work and donned a ukulele for the Adore track “Blessed and Gone” which was played for the first time since 2000.

A cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” gave way to Zwan’s “A New Poetry” to close the main set. A three song encore featured the first “Spaceboy” since 1994, Corgan’s “El-A-Noy” and the debut of the new track “Cardinal Rule” to close out the show.
