Nicole Atkins Joins Joe Russo’s Almost Dead At Brooklyn Bowl

Grateful Dead tribute act Joe Russo’s Almost Dead played the second show of a three-night stand last night at Brooklyn Bowl in New York. The band led by drummer Joe Russo received bonus vocals from Nicole Atkins and debuted a song originally performed by the Benevento/Russo Duo.
After playing the same venue Friday night, Russo, keyboardist Marco Benevento, bassist Dave Dreiwitz and guitarists Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger opened Saturday night’s Brooklyn Bowl gig with Atkins helping to get the show started with “The Music Never Stopped.” Atkins stuck around for subsequent takes on “Dancin’ In The Streets,” “Row Jimmy” and took lead on “(The Stranger) Two Souls In Communion” before turning the stage over to the band to close out the first half.
The second set kicked off with “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire On The Mountain” that featured a scorching solo by Benevento and was followed by the band’s first “Looks Like Rain.” Later on, toward the end of the set the band debuted the Benevento/Russo Duo original “Becky” in the middle of “Viola Lee Blues,” adding lyrics from the Dead tune to The Duo instrumental. The band added vocals to the set closing “We Bid You Goodnight” and the always rockingly appropriate “One More Saturday Night” filled the encore slot to conclude their second night at Brooklyn Bowl.
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead concludes their three-night run at Brooklyn Bowl tonight. Nugs.TV is serving up a live webcast of the show in both SD and HD formats beginning at 7 p.m. ET here.
