Vocalist Nicki Bluhm will issue a new solo album entitled To Rise You Gotta Fall on June 1 via Compass Records. Nicki has unveiled the LP’s title track and also tacked on a number of dates to her upcoming touring itinerary.
Bluhm moved from California to Tennessee in recent years and recorded To Rise You Gotta Fall at the historic Sam Phillips Recording studio in Memphis. “The last three years have been full of heartache, growth, setbacks, blind turns and unexpected beauty; a time to hurt and to heal. But in this universe, the light always finds its way to the darkest of places and this new collection of songs is proof of exactly that,” Nicki wrote about the new album. “An array of emotions strung over an unexpectedly arduous time in my life when my entire world was turned upside down. These songs are the conversations I never got to have, the words I never had the chance to say, and the catharsis I wouldn’t have survived without.”

The vocalist went without the services of her longtime band The Gramblers for the album. Rolling Stone unveiled the title track, which finds Nicki backed by a group of veteran musicians that includes keyboardist Al Gamble of St. Paul & The Broken Bones, former Wilco drummer Ken Coomer and guitarist Will Sexton. Bluhm took an old-school approach as she used analog recording and tracked the LP live.
Nicki Bluhm has also added a bevy of tour dates. In addition to a run opening for The Wood Brothers, Nicki will mix appearances at festivals across the country and headlining dates over the next few months. The tour currently extends through a series of July dates that include sets at the Peach Music Festival and Floyd Fest in addition to her own shows in Cambridge, New York City, Philadelphia and Nashville.
