New Covers For Trey Anastasio Band In Brooklyn

Phish guitarist led the Trey Anastasio Band through the group’s first show of the year last night at the ornate Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. TAB mixed songs from the soon-to-be-released Paper Wheels with back catalog gems as well as three brand-new covers at the Fall Tour opener.

Anastasio and the classic TAB lineup of bassist Tony Markellis, drummer Russ Lawton, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, trumpeter/vocalist Jennifer Hartswick, trombonist/vocalist Natalie Cressman and saxophonist/vocalist James Casey kicked off the show with “Gotta Jibboo.” The evening’s first big surprise came next when TAB debuted a cover of Bob Marley’s “Soul Rebel.” Trey handled lead vocals on the song off the reggae legend’s 1970 Soul Rebels LP. Later in the first set, Anastasio told a story about attending an April 9, 2000 Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young show in East Rutherford, New Jersey with his wife, bandmates and friends. Trey explained how he first met Graham Nash on that night, who told him “don’t fuck it up!” in response to the success Phish has recently achieved. With that, TAB launched into the debut of “49 Bye-Byes” off the first Crosby, Stills and Nash LP.

The second set opened with the TAB classic “Money, Love and Change” before the seven- piece performed “The Song” from Paper Wheels. TAB’s new LP was also represented by “Flying Machines,” “Lever Boy” and “Bounce” in the second set. Hartswick handled lead vocals on both a cover of Gorillaz’s “Clint Eastwood” within the closing stanza as well as the evening’s third cover debut – Donna Summer’s “MacArthur Park” – which ended Set Two. A “First Tube” encore brought the show to a close. The Trey Anastasio Band returns to Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre tonight.
