Nearly a year after abruptly canceling 16 dates with Crazy Horse, Neil Young is finally back on the road. The 79-year-old rock icon and his new band, The Chrome Hearts, launched their 31-date Love Earth Tour 2025 on Wednesday at Dalhalla in Rättvik, Sweden.

Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts treated fans at the former limestone quarry turned summer music venue to a 93-minute, 15-song performance. The setlist featured plenty of beloved classics along with three tunes Young hadn’t played live in at least a decade, including a pair of gems from his 2003 record, Greendale. Surprisingly, the quintet avoided material from their just released album, Talkin To The Trees.

The Chrome Hearts consist of guitarist Micah Nelson, organist Spooner Oldham, drummer Anthony LoGerfo and bassist Corey McCormick. Young debuted the project last September with an appearance at Farm Aid and two shows at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York.

Neil Young took the stage solo to open the show with an acoustic “Sugar Mountain.” Then, The Chrome Hearts emerged to back an electrified Young on his first version of Greendale standout “Be The Rain” since August 8, 2014. A string of “hits” followed: “When You Dance, I Can Really Love,” “Cinnamon Girl,” “Fuckin’ Up” and “Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black).”

The legendary Canadian musician went solo acoustic once more for the ensuing “The Needle And The Damage Done,” the haunting lament about heroin’s devastation he last played on July 5, 2019. Young hung on to his acoustic as The Chrome Hearts returned for “Harvest Moon.”

Neil had a pair of setlist surprises next. Young dusted off the title track from CSNY’s 1999 LP, Looking Forward, for its first play since April 19, 2000. He then went back to Greendale for the extended “Sun Green,” which was last performed on March 21, 2004.

Young and The Chrome Hearts romped through “Like A Hurricane” to continue the tour opener. The versatile musician then sat at the piano for “Name Of Love,” a CSNY cut he busted out last month at a benefit concert in Ontario after 11 years on the shelf. Harvest favorite “Old Man” capped the main set before the night ended with a rousing “Rockin’ In The Free World” encore.
