In 2023, Neil Young returned to the road after four years for his Coastal solo tour. A new documentary directed by his wife, actress/filmmaker Daryl Hannah, entitled Coastal will be screened in theaters worldwide for one night only on April 17. Young will then release an accompanying live album, Coastal: The Soundtrack, on April 18 via Reprise Records, and has previewed the set with audio of “Vampire Blues.”
The legendary musician dug deep into his repertoire for the 15-show Coastal Tour, which featured stops across the West Coast between June 30 and July 24, 2023. Young switched between acoustic guitar, electric guitar, 12-string guitar, piano, harmonica and pump organ each night of the run using a wireless mic to move around stage and present the material storyteller-style.

Coastal: The Soundtrack opens as all shows on the trek did with “I’m The Ocean,” a song from Young’s 1995 album with Pearl Jam Mirror Ball he hadn’t played since 1997 until the 2023 tour. The 12-track collection also includes Mirror Ball cut “Song X” and “Prime Of Life” from Sleeps With Angels, which Neil broke out for the Coastal Tour after 28 and 29 years, respectively. There’s also the new-at-the-time “Don’t Forget Love” and even a tune Young didn’t perform publicly on the trek — the Buffalo Springfield classic “Expecting To Fly.”
Yet, it’s the incendiary “Vampire Blues” that stands out most from the tracklist. Young dusted off the beloved song from On The Beach early in the tour for the first time since its 1974 debut. Listen to the electrifying performance of “Vampire Blues” off Coastal: The Soundtrack below:
Coastal the film is described in press materials as “a personal, behind-the-scenes documentary on Neil Young as he cruises the coast on his 2023 solo US tour, giving an up-close and intimate view into the life of one of history’s most iconic songwriters and musicians. Capturing Young as he navigates a return to the stage post-Covid, Hannah allows the audience to be an observing participant in a rare, candid peek behind the curtain of this unguarded iconoclast. It’s a celebration of living that has been a long time coming, and illuminates up close and personal who Neil Young is, where he came from, and in many ways, where he was going: Coastal.”
Tickets for the screenings go on sale next Thursday, March 6. Head to CoastalTheMovie.com for more information and to purchase tickets.
