Neil Young kicks off 2025 with a bold declaration: “big change,” the first release from his new band, neil young and the chrome hearts. With its lowercase stylization mirroring its raw and grounded vibe, the song addresses the complex, shifting landscape of our times, capturing the uncertainty, urgency and hope of the present moment.
Featuring Micah Nelson (guitar/vocals), Corey McCormick (bass/vocals), Anthony LoGerfo (drums) and Spooner Oldham (Farfisa organ), Young and the Chrome Hearts create a sound as vibrant and unfiltered as life itself. Young’s longtime mixing engineer John Hanlon calls the track “in-your-face loud irreverent rock ‘n roll paint splatter on the canvas in the vein of a Jackson Pollock painting.” It’s the kind of visceral, analog chaos recorded at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studio that hits like a punch to the gut—in the best way possible.

Co-produced by Young and Lou Adler, “big change” is more than just a rock anthem; it’s a statement. Through its big drums, driving guitars, and repeated chorus—“Big change is coming! Could be bad, and it could be good!”—Young challenges listeners to grapple with the possibilities of the future. It’s a track that refuses to shy away from life’s pressing questions and meets the challenges of modern life head-on, embodying what Hanlon calls “classic Neil Young for these new ages.”
neil young and the chrome hearts invite listeners to embrace the uncertainty of big changes ahead. Join them. This is music for moving forward.
