Neil Young Discovers ‘Second Song’ On New Album With The Chrome Hearts

Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts announced a new album, Second Song, arriving on September 18 through Reprise Records. The influential singer-songwriter previewed the record today with the title track.

Second Song follows a live album, As Time Explodes, from Young and his latest group The Chrome Hearts: guitarist Micah Nelson, bassist Corey McCormick, drummer Anthony LoGerfo and renowned keyboardist Spooner Oldham.

As teased earlier this year, Second Song includes tunes Young wrote very early in his career and well as new numbers. The seven-track studio effort is described by press materials as a “mostly acoustic song cycle [that] recalls a wistful, deeply personal musical kinship to some of Young’s earlier works found on Comes A Time or Prairie Wind.”

The aptly titled Second Song is an emblem of Young’s prolific career. While always in flux, Neil Young has seemed to create with one constant: following where the music leads.

“The road Young has traveled feels like a surprise that brings a different turn with every song,” the press release noted. “It isn’t anything that could be predicted, or one that he has planned. Songs come together and present themselves organically. In that way, everything the man has done feels like a Second Song, one always different from the first one.”

Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts cut Second Song in analog at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studios in Malibu, California. Lou Adler and The Volume Dealers (Neil Young and Niko Bolas) produced the 7-track LP.

11-and-a-half minutes of the record is filled with “Second Song,” a tune that floats through the decades as Neil sings: “Through smoking leaves of time the words just tumbled forward in this second song of mine…”
