Neighbor recently brought their first southern tour to Salvage Station in Asheville, North Carolina for late-night performances on April 24 and 29. Video featuring both sets was livestreamed by IAmAvl and can be viewed below.

The Boston-based quintet consists of keyboardist Richard James, guitarist Lyle Brewer, drummer Dean Johnston and bassist Dan Kelly. Neighbor played the venue’s indoor stage following concerts outdoors at Salvage Station from The String Cheese Incident (April 24) and Goose (April 29).

Neighbor opened with live staple “Trippin’ In A Van” on the 24th and then interspersed a “Tom Papp” quote within “Stranger Part Of Town.” The four-piece presented a seamless run of “Granddaddy Said,” “Isla” and “Chickens” next before working through “Thunder Island.” From there, the group offered an instrumental take on the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree” and followed “Into The Sun” with a show-closing “Magic Marble Crew” and “Mary And Martha” pairing connected by a drum solo from Johnston.

The quartet’s performance on April 29 started with “Pine Tree” ahead of a “Steel” that bled into “Don’t You Cry.” Dean Johnston pounded the skins to link the ensuing “One For The Hoop” and “Trippin’ In A Van.” Then, Goose multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach emerged on guitar for “Mighty Apple Tree,” an original that dates back to the group’s time as house band at the now-shuttered Thunder Road in Somerville. Fan favorite “Cucamonga Carl” came next along with “Magna Zero.”

Neighbor bassist Dan Kelly stepped into the spotlight after “Magna Zero” to front a cover of the Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?” The band went on to show off their improvisational prowess on “Planet Silver” and followed “Shitstorm” with James performing “White Flag” solo.

This Friday, May 6, Neighbor plays their biggest hometown gig to date with a concert at Boston’s Paradise Rock Club. Tickets are on sale now via LiveNation.com.
