Pusha T & The Roots’ Black Thought Among Gorillaz’s Guests At MSG

Gorillaz welcomed Pusha T and The Roots’ Black Thought among a parade of guests at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Tuesday. Pusha T and Harlem Gospel Choir joined for “Let Me Out,” while Black Thought appeared twice. Miho Hatori, Asha Puthli and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble also sat in at MSG.

The NYC show was part of the North American leg of The Mountain Tour, which Gorillaz announced in March in support of The Mountain. Damon Albarn, the musician behind the animated Gorillaz collective, released the album in February with contributions from a long list of guests that includes Black Thought and Asha Puthli.

Tour support acts Little Simz and Deltron 3030 opened Tuesday’s concert. Several of the night’s other guests have been regular fixtures on the tour. Little Simz, Kara Jackson, The Pharcyde’s Bootie Brown, De La Soul’s Posdnuos and Del the Funky Homosapien have all been fixtures on the tour.

Gorillaz opened with the title track from The Mountain and early in the set welcomed Miho Hatori for “19-2000” from the group’s 2001 self-titled album. Two songs later, Gorillaz brought out Black Thought and Asha Puthli to provide their contributions to The Mountain track “The Moon Cave.”

Kara Jackson’s guest turn came on “Orange County,” Little Simz joined for “Garage Palace” and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble helped Gorillaz give “Broken” its first performance of the tour. Bootie Brown emerged for “Stylo” before Pusha T and Harlem Gospel Choir took the stage for “Let Me Out.” Gorillaz performed the Humanz song, which featured Pusha T and Mavis Staples on the studio version, live in 2017 and not purportedly again until Tuesday.

Michelle Ndegwa appeared on “Kids With Guns” before Black Thought returned for “The Sad God” from The Mountain. “Demon Days” with the Harlem Gospel Choir was selected to close the main set.

The encore opened with “Cloud of Unknowing” and the tour debut of “Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach,” with Hypnotic Brass Ensemble back onstage. Del the Funky Homosapien joined for “Rock the House,” Bootie Brown returned for “Dirty Harry” and Posdnuos sat in on “Feel Good Inc.” Del and Dan the Automator joined Gorillaz for the closing “Clint Eastwood.”
