Louisville-based rockers My Morning Jacket held a Summer Tour opening concert last night at PNC Pavilion at Riverbend in Cincinnati. The band offered a pair of cover song debuts during their performance packed with career-spanning originals.

Frontman Jim James led the band through a set and tour opening rendition of “Compound Fracture” followed by “Spring (Among the Living),” both of which from their most recent LP The Waterfall. The rest of the main set saw MMJ offer takes on such favorites as “Off The Record,” “I’m Amazed,” “The Bear,” “Bermuda Highway” and “Steam Engine.” They also played James’ “A New Life” and classic rarities “War Begun” and “O Is The One That Is Real.”

The first MMJ cover of Allen Toussaint’s “Yes We Can” (which James recently performed solo) came prior to the “Dancefloors” set closer. The Doris Day/Sly & The Family Stone hit “Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)” made its MMJ live debut to initiate the encore that also featured takes on “Wordless Chorus,” “Holdin On to Black Metal” and “Phone Went West.” Check out audience-shot video highlights from last night’s tour opener in Cincy.
