After learning of the untimely death of celebrated musician Prince at age 57 today, many fellow musicians have shared their interpretations of one of his best-known songs. Released in 1984 as the lead single off of Purple Rain, the track “When Doves Cry” soon became a standout inclusion in Prince’s eclectically influential songbook. Below is a collection of covers of “When Doves Cry” shared today by three different bands in remembrance of the late great Purple One.
“Today we lost one of the greats. RIP Prince,” wrote Gov’t Mule while sharing an official recording of a Prince cover. The band posted their take on Prince’s “When Doves Cry” intertwining with the Mule original “Beautifully Broken” featuring George Porter, Jr. on bass from the 2003 The Deepest End Live In Concert release, listen here:
Earlier today Umphrey’s McGee passed along condolences regarding Prince’s passing. They also shared a version of his “When Doves Cry” paired with an UM original, posting the “Bright Lights, Big City” from August 7, 2015 at The Werk Out Music & Arts Festival in Ohio, stream it below:
UM also posted pro-shot video of their covering “When Doves Cry” on Prince’s home turf during a performance just under a year ago at First Avenue in Minneapolis (where they’ll be playing next week). Watch the video captured by TourGigs here:
Though bluegrass might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Prince, his impact broke genre boundaries of all kinds as seen in video shared today by Greensky Bluegrass. The pro-shot footage below, again of “When Doves Cry,” comes from their February 28, 2014 performance at WOW Hall in Eugene, Oregon, watch:
