Jason Sudeikis made a surprise appearance during Mumford & Sons’ concert at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night, joining Marcus Mumford for a special performance of the beloved Ted Lasso theme song.
Marcus Mumford started singing the theme slowly after the 10th song of the concert when cameras turned to the actor and co-creator of the Apple TV+ series standing on the side of the stage. Fans erupted in cheers as Sudeikis hopped onstage for an impromptu duet. The pair performed the theme backed by the band before sharing a hug onstage. Sudeikis then returned to the crowd.
Mumford has a longstanding connection to Ted Lasso. In addition to the theme, the singer-songwriter has contributed other material to the series, including a rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” The Ted Lasso theme song earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series in 2021.
Sudeikis’ surprise appearance comes as Ted Lasso returns for its highly anticipated fourth season. The new season premiered earlier this month, with Sudeikis reprising his Emmy-winning role as the relentlessly optimistic American football coach who heads to England to manage AFC Richmond and now its sister women’s team. The actor and his Ted Lasso co-stars helped Mumford & Sons debut the theme song live last summer in Kansas City, where they were filmed the fourth season.

Elsewhere in the show, Marcus Mumford led the group through “Kansas City” from his time in The New Basement Tapes for only the second time on their current Prizefighter Tour. Mumford & Sons also welcomed Medium Build to help out on Prizefighter track “Here,” as they have at other shows he’s opened this summer.
One final surprise came during the B-Stage segment at the end of the main set, when Oscar Isaac emerged for the Mumford & Sons’ debut of “Dink’s Song (Fare Thee Well).” Marcus Mumford and Oscar Isaac covered the folk song for the Coen Brothers’ film Inside Llewyn Davis. The 2013 movie and its soundtrack also featured a solo performance of “Dink’s Song (Fare Thee Well) from Isaac, who portrayed Llewyn Davis.
Mumford & Sons return to Madison Square Garden tonight before they conclude the run at the “World’s Greatest Arena” on Thursday. The Prizefighter Tour continues through October 8.
